Parish of São Vicente, in Braga

Praça de Mouzinho de Albuquerque is located in the parish of São Vicente, city and municipality of Braga.

The square was opened in 1725, on the initiative of the then Archbishop of Braga, D. Rodrigo de Moura Teles, with a project by architect Manuel Pinto de Vilalobos.

The current official name “Praça de Mouzinho de Albuquerque” was given on January 4, 1898, at the proposal of the then vice-president of the Chamber.

The designation was only confirmed by the municipality on August 3, 1942.

The public place continues, however, to be called “Campo Novo” by the population.

In the center of the square there is a statue of Pedro V of Portugal by the sculptor Teixeira Lopes, Sr.

This square was built in 1869 in Campo de Santana, today Avenida Central, on December 22, 1913 it was transferred to its current location.

In addition to the garden, this square also features a granite fountain, at the north end, and the Palace of the Count of Carcavelos, built in the 19th century, which was used by the Ministry of Health.

The Patronage of Nossa Senhora da Luz and the São Vicente scout group are located around this square.
